How Technology Has Changed The Presidential Elections

The US presidential elections are picking up steam, and these days, they work a little differently. Sure, the core process is still the same, but technology is changing the way we think them. We no longer have to stand around and confine our discussions to the home and the workplace; all we need is a keyboard to showcase our thoughts. Not only can we get access to more opinions and information, but candidates have to be even more careful with everything they do. So, let’s have a look at some ways in which technology has changed the presidential elections.


Social media has affected our lives in many ways. It has been around for a long time, but has grown a lot in the last four years. Twitter and Facebook have continued to explode in popularity. New platforms like Instagram and SnapChat have also risen to prominence. We constantly discuss the elections through these methods, even going as far as making memes and silly videos about them. Whatever we think about it; social media will influence our views. We’ll continue to see different opinions and shape our perceptions around them. When it’s time to vote in the us presidential election polls, we won’t forget what we’ve seen.

For that reason, social media is also a crucial tool for the candidates. They’ll often try out different marketing techniques to get ahead, sometimes unsuccessfully. There appears to be an inherent desire to “stay cool” with these campaigns, often ending up in disaster. Of course, candidates need to be incredibly aware of everything they say and do these days as well. One slip-up, and it’ll be all over social media within minutes. A tiny error could ruin an entire campaign, much more so than in the past.

There’s more to technology than social media, though. While candidates can feel the wrath of social media very easily, other elements of technology are there to help them in new ways. In particular, analytical software and stat-tracking are paramount to their success. They can keep incredibly accurate tabs on all the strategies they implement. With just a click of a button, they can see what is and isn’t working, and tailor their approaches accordingly. Of course, this has always been the case to a certain degree, but the level of depth is like never before, and will only continue to improve.

If you looked back ten years ago, technology was nothing like it is today. The election process has changed radically, and you have to wonder what it’ll be like ten years from now. Will social media still be as prominent as it is today? Probably. Inevitably, new pieces of technology will be available to assist both candidates as well as voters. It’s possible that traditional campaigns will disappear entirely in favor of technology-based ones. It may even go the other way as candidates realise the damning effect it can have on their campaigns when things go wrong. One thing’s for sure; technology will continue to change the way we think about presidential elections in the future.
