What it Takes to Keep a Data Center Running

Giving you access to all the internet has to offer takes a lot of energy. Data centers across the globe hold millions of servers that allow you to send requests and receive responses. Every time you search for a news story or download a TV show, your request passes through one of the servers at one of the massive data center complexes.

Data centers are typically very expensive to maintain. Housing all those interconnected servers requires an enormous amount of power. They must run 24 hours a day, seven days a week. One data center can use as much energy as 180,000 homes, and the energy requirements are increasing each year. In fact, each complex holds megawatt generators holding thousands of gallons of fuel in case of a power outage.
