Starting an online business can be both scary and exciting. However, would-be entrepreneurs often let their fears stand in the way of their dreams. Recognizing common fears is a great way to overcome them.

There is a lot to do when starting an online business, so finding a definite starting point can be difficult. Do you find a supplier? Do you purchase an internet shopping cart? How will you handle taxes? The best thing to do in this situation is to talk to someone who has done what you’re trying to do. Find a mentor, or join a mastermind group full of like-minded entrepreneurs. There are also great blogs on the topic of starting an online store.

Fear #2: You don’t know enough.

It’s natural to feel like you’re not knowledgeable enough to go ahead with your plans. However, if you’re at the point where you’re read to open an online store, then you probably know more than you realize.

The best thing to do is to just jump in where ever you are, and find out answers as you go along. After all, continued learning is a part of life.

Fear #3: Other people will criticize you.

So your mother-in-law, former co-workers, best friend, and second cousin all think that you’re crazy for starting XYZ business online. When it comes to major life choices, it’s okay to get feedback from others. However, your inner compass should ultimately determine the direction you go in. Doing the “safe and rational” thing might be more appealing to those people, but you know that you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur.

Fear #4: You won’t get customers.

This one is understandable. You present a product or service to the the world that is dear to you, only to be met by lackluster sales. In this case, it’s best to stick to the facts. If your market research says that there’s a demand, and you’re willing and able to supply that demand, then continue on with confidence. Consistently deliver what you promise, and you’ll greatly increase your chances of succeeding with your online store.

The old adage goes “Feel the fear and do it anyway.” Take a leap of faith and follow your dream of starting an online business. You will be glad that you did.
