Samyang Introduced A Super-Fast 20mm Full-Frame Lens With A F1.8 Maximum Aperture

Samyang has announced another lens as part of their “2016 Summer Samyang Blockbusters” promotion, this time a new 20mm f/1.8 full-frame manual lens. The lens will be available both in stills and video-centric bodies (f/1.8 and t/1.9 versions). Featuring an optical construction comprising 13 elements in 12 groups – including 3 extra-low-dispersion and 2 aspherical glass elements – and also an iris diaphragm with 7 rounded blades, the Samyang 20mm F1.8 ED AS UMC offers an angle of view of 94.8 degree and a close-focus point of 20cm/8″.

Designed for high-resolution cameras for stills over 50 MP and 8K video, both lenses are manual-focus optics. According to Samyang, the lenses take the company’s image quality to the next level with the unprecedented resolving power.

The f/1.8 version of the lens offers a bright, fast maximum aperture and Samyang’s Ultra Multi Coating for improved optical performance.

The lens will come in Canon EOS, Pentax K, Nikon AE, Sony alpha, Canon M, Fujifilm X, Samsung NX, Sony E, FT, and MFT mounts.

This isn’t the first super fast 20mm photo lens on the market, Nikon and Sigma already have 20mm F1.8 lenses, and Sigma also have the even faster 20mm F1.4. That said, it’s great to see increased choice and a design specifically aimed at video shooters.

As for pricing and availability; the new Samyang 20mm F/1.8 is expected to be available worldwide in September with a suggested retail price of $499 for the stand version.
